Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the focus of many misconceptions created by layman’s imagination. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t regard them to be genuine scientific endeavours. Following are some of the well known myths about hypnosis and the truth behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. It hinges more on the science of psychology and is very simple to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after seeing participants effectively experiencing its power in public sessions. They hold that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Even people with strong will power can fall under the spell of an expert hypnosis practitioner.

Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an altered state of consciousness. A hypnotized individual is totally aware of his surroundings. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down completely and is hence able to concentrate fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Another misconception, which has been circulated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of humans. The researchers are somewhat true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis method without considering individual differences in nature and temperament. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a workable answer as different people come under different character types, and thus respond to different techniques.

Many people take hypnosis to be a variant of meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and usually has nothing to do with communication. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. Trance is again a state of mind devoid of any communication, while communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis method.

Another myth is that physical and behavioural alterations in an individual are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis certainly cannot alter the body in abnormal ways. However, it can propel the body to a healthy shape through behavioural transformations like eating in a controlled manner, and giving up smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of inspiration in a person.

If a person falls for all the wrong notions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a happier and healthier life.
